Q & A From the Founder of Daily Shade Sunscreen

 Q & A from our Founder Breelyn Vanleeuwen PA-C

Q: What Makes Daily Shade Different?

A: So many things! For one we are Tinted! For years women have had the luxury of a tinted face sunscreen while our children are left with either chemical sunscreen (which are potentially dangerous and NOT ideal for daily use) or a natural zinc sunscreen that looks like white paint all over their skin creating little ghosts running around. Children deserve better. Which is why I created DAILY SHADE SUNSCREEN the first DAILY wear ALL-NATURAL ZINC Sunscreen for Kids, with a TINT!

Q: Does the tint change the color of my child’s skin?

A: The answer is not at all! The tint is designed to allow the zinc (which is the active ingredient protecting your child’s skin), to disappear like magic. Leaving no sign of color after you apply it. The tint is a neutral skin tone color that matches with over 98% of skin tones.

Q: What does it mean when you say TRULY an all Zinc Company?

A: We are TRULY an ALL ZINC Sunscreen Company because no matter the product line you choose from Daily Shade, you can rest assured EVERY SINLGE PRODUCT we put to market will be a TRUE MINERAL Sunscreen! No hidden UV chemical filters here. This is rare in the sunscreen world. Marketing can be a very very sneaky business. No official rules are followed stating how much active zinc needs to be in a sunscreen for companies to claim it as “mineral”. Which means most sunscreen companies are slapping the word Mineral on their sunscreen while only containing small amounts of zinc and the rest of the product is augmented by the UV chemical filters we are trying to avoid. I wish they would all be properly label their products as HYBRID sunscreens instead of misleading the consumer.

Q: What is the ingredient you say to look for in the inactive ingredients?

A: Daily Shade is Butyloctyl Salicylate FREE! This goes along with the point above talking about UV Chemical filters. Butyloctyl Salicylate (aka BS) is found in a giant portion of sunscreen products on market. This is because butyloctyl salicylate functions as an emollient AND a UV filter. It is used to improve texture, spread ability, and water resistance. The problem is the body reacts to this the exact way it does to a UV chemical sunscreen filter. We avoid using this in our products because at Daily Shade Sunscreen we value safety over everything else.

LET's Play a Game! This isn't an answer to a question but rather an informative game so play it with me real quick! Go get the “mineral” sunscreen you are using right now. Go to the INACTIVE INGREDIENT part of the label. Now search slowly for the ingredient butyloctyl salicylate. There’s a good chance you’ll find BS in your product. If you do, you are NOT wearing a true mineral sunscreen. This was initially devastating news for me as every single sunscreen or foundation I wore contained this ingredient. But once you know better, you choose better. Okay back to Q&A...

Q: Are you a natural sunscreen?

A: HECK YES we are! And so so proud of it! We know our branding is adorable but please don’t let that fool you. We are serious about natural sunscreen. Our sunscreen is 99.4% Naturally Derived making us top rated on brands such as Yuka rating a 93/100! Which is not a common nor easy claim to make.

Q: Do you have a No list?

A: We sure do and here it is: Our NO LIST because our kid’s health matters, We do not formulate with: UV Chemical Filters, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Artificial Dyes, Synthetic Fragrances, PABA, Dimethicone, Petrolatum, Parabens, Phthalates, PEGs, BPA, SLS/SLEs.

Q: Can you explain what a custom sunscreen is?

A: We are a CUSTOM created sunscreen. Because the level of entry into the sunscreen world is so high it is not often a truly new sunscreen comes onto the market. It might seem like new sunscreens come onto market often because companies launch sunscreens often but most of the time these are what we call white labeled meaning they are already created, and companies purchases the formula and puts their brand on it. The FDA heavily regulates sunscreen as a drug so launching a new sunscreen is like putting a new drug on the market. Because of this process, it took us 4.5 years to create and launch our sunscreen!
